In his films, Mario García Torres’s positions the art space within landscapes of narratives, which temporalize space within social and linguistic frameworks. Open Letter to Dr. Atl is a one-way letter exchange with a dead artist – Mexican painter Dr. Atl –, “discussing” with him the implications of installing a branch of the Guggenheim Museum somewhere in the unspoiled Mexican landscape in the surroundings of Guadalajara. García Torres addresses an imagined space in which something may (also retrospectively) or may not have happened and creates a potential scenario in which events become possible, thus visible, thus negotiable.
