Omer Fast

Continuity, 2012

Having earned wide recognition with his film The Casting (2007), Omer Fast now presents Continuity at dOCUMENTA (13), his first film with German actors and filmed in Germany. In his video installations and projections, Omer Fast plays and calls into question the ephemeral transformations of experiences into histories, memories, and narrations.

In his recent work, Fast is dealing with soldiers and their traumas after returning from war and their impossibility to fit into society and continue living life where they left it. Returning from Afghanistan, a young soldier is being expected at the station by his parents. They drive home together and have dinner, like they used to, but it is unthinkable to leave what has happened behind.

Omer Fast is showing this scene in various iterations, it begins as an emotional story of homecoming and grows strange with each rendezvous. By multiplying he underlines the fact that society has always been trusting and still trusts in war as a tool to regulate international conflicts of interests. And yet we are not ready to deal with the effects war has, be it on a single human being or on humanity in general.
What first appears to be strange anomalies in an otherwise familiar domestic environment gradually becomes a nightmare scenario. As the young man struggles to make sense of his increasingly surreal and alien home, it becomes really doubtful whether he’s ever actually returned from service.

Omer Fast was born in 1972 in Jerusalem and lives in Berlin.
Recent solo exhibitions have included the Kölnische Kunstverein, Cologne (2011), the Cleveland Museum of Art (2010), the Whitney Museum, New York (2009), and the Kunstverein Hannover (2008). He has participated in the Biennale di Venezia (2011) and the Whitney Biennial (2002, 2008). In 2009, Omer Fast received the Preis der Nationalgalerie für junge Kunst, Berlin.
